Improve your website SEO

Your website is the shop window for your business

Your website is your online location that people can visit to learn about your business and what you have to offer. However, it’s not enough to just have a website, what good is a site if nobody visits? You need to make sure your site is optimised so it is your business that people find when searching for places that offer what you do.

Consider this?

If you have a physical business location people find you either by knowing who you are and looking you up or by coming across you as they walk down the street.

It is the same online. If someone knows your business name they can search for you and go directly to your website. Otherwise, they need to find you by searching for the product, service or information they need and that you can provide – the online equivalent of ‘walking down the street’. This is where having a good SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) strategy for your website is extremely important to ensure that those potential customers find YOU.

Three steps to an SEO friendly website

There are three steps you should consider when improving your website SEO:

  1. Attract your ideal customer

Who are they? What do they do? What are they looking for? What can you offer them? Finding your niche audience means using keyword research for SEO to find what your ideal customer is looking for online. It may mean fewer people will be searching for what you offer, BUT those that do will be the kind of people that you want.

  1. Keep them on your website

Good SEO content incorporates stet from your search term research and is written using this terminology and in a way that people find valuable and enjoyable to read. The goal is that they stay on your website longer and come back for more. A good SEO strategy also includes internal link building – incorporating links that take people to other parts of your website so they stay on your site for longer.

  1. Lead them to your call to action

The ultimate goal of your website is to turn visitors into enquirers and then clients or customers. As part of your marketing SEO strategy you need to lead your visitors to your call to action, which could be a sale, a phone call, a completed enquiry form, an email or something similar.

Checklist for an SEO friendly website

Here is a checklist of things you should consider:

  1. Mobile responsive – More and more people now use mobile devices to search for information. It is vital that your website has a responsive design so that it is user-friendly for all devices.
  2. Keyword research and optimisation – Consider which keywords, especially long-tail keywords, are most relevant to your business and the customers you want to attract. There are many keyword research tools available online that can help with this.
  3. Local SEO – If you have a physical business location or want to attract local clients, make sure that you consider this in your keyword research. Check your contact information is up-to-date and correct on your website and in all external listings and directories. Plus on your social media profiles.
  4. Keyword use – As determined by your research, use the most important keywords, including long-tail keywords, to optimise the page titles and header tags of your website pages as well as the meta titles and descriptions (these are the short and long descriptions of the page which appears under the title on the search engine results page (SERP).
  5. On page content – Make sure copy on the page is both SEO friendly and reader-friendly. Use headings and bullet points to break up the text and keep paragraphs short.
  6. No keyword stuffing – Use keywords naturally in the text for good SEO content on the page and in the titles, tags and descriptions.
  7. Internal link building – Add links using descriptive keywords in the anchor text to help people navigate to other parts of your website, and also to help Google find and index your pages.
  8. Add blogs – Google likes fresh content and this is an easy way to improve your website SEO and add value to your potential customers. So regularly post your news and updated.
  9. Don’t forget images! – It is important to consider images when making your website more SEO-friendly. Change file names and alt tags to include keywords relevant to the image. Keep file sizes small so they don’t slow down your site.
  10. No duplicate content – good SEO content should be unique to you and your website and not repeated on more than one page.
